Documenting the production and maiden voyage of a canoe built by The Manor Makers, the Trade Routes exhibition lifts the lid off an extraordinary project led by Sheffield-based artist Christopher Jarratt.

The Manor Makers, based at Green Estate, are a group of young people working with traditional craft tools augmented by the latest in 3D design and cutting technology. Over three months, they have worked with Christopher, designer Paul Reardon (Peter & Paul) and carpenter Tom Collier to build the land and water-going vessel.

Progress was tracked on their Instagram feed. Using Sheffield’s waterways as a site of inspiration and investigation, the exhibition begins with a group walk from Manor to Site Gallery and then tells story of the process of making and community building in Sheffield today.

The exhibition launched with a Trade Routes Walk & Welcome Celebration: Sat 10 December, 10am – 2.30pm, 2016. The exhibition was held from 10.12.2016 to 14.01.2017 at: Site Gallery, 1 Brown Street, Sheffield, S1 2BS The project has been documented in film and in a print publication (edition of 100).

This work was supported by the Sheffield Culture Consortium through Year of Making 2016, Making Ways and Arts Council England Ambition for Excellence.
